Icame here tonight with... See more

My boyfriend insisted on a luxury Valentine's dinner.
When the $380 check came, he told me to pay half.
I refused. He paid the full bill in silence, got up, and walked out.
The waitress came up and whispered, "I can't keep quiet. Your boyfriend actually left a note for you." My heart dropped when I read it.
It said, “I came here tonight with a very good feeling in my heart,” the note began.
“I thought this dinner would be a beautiful memory for both of us. But when I looked at your expression the entire evening, I felt something heavy growing inside me. It felt like you didn’t love me at all. In your eyes, I only saw money. I felt deeply disappointed. Maybe I misunderstood you, or maybe I misunderstood everything between us. But tonight made something clear to me. We should break up.”

My hands began to tremble as I finished reading.
For a moment, the busy restaurant around me faded into silence.
The soft music, the clinking glasses, the quiet conversations at nearby tables—all of it seemed far away.
I stared at the paper again, rereading the words as if they might suddenly change.
Break up?
Because I refused to split the bill?
I didn’t understand.
Just minutes ago, I thought we were simply having an awkward moment. I never imagined it would end like this.
My chest tightened. I quickly grabbed my phone and called him.
One ring.
Two rings.
Three rings.
Then the call ended.
I tried again.
This time it went straight to voicemail.
A cold feeling spread through my stomach.
Something about the silence felt wrong, like a door had suddenly closed without warning.
I paid the rest of the bill with shaky hands, barely hearing the waitress softly wishing me a good night. Then I rushed out into the cold evening air.
The city lights blurred as I hurried toward my car.
I called him again while driving.
Still nothing.

My thoughts spun in circles.
Why would he think I cared more about money than him? That wasn’t true. Not even close.
Yes, I had refused to split the bill—but not because I was selfish.
He had insisted on the luxury restaurant.
He had insisted on ordering the expensive wine.
He had insisted on the entire experience.
I had assumed it was his treat. Valentine’s Day. His idea.
And when the check came, his sudden request to split it felt strange—almost like a test.
But now… somehow that moment had turned into the end of our relationship.
By the time I reached his apartment building, my heart was racing.
The lights inside his place were off.

I knocked.
No answer.
I knocked again.
Still nothing.
I tried calling one more time, standing outside his door in the quiet hallway.
Voicemail.
I slowly slid down against the wall and sat on the floor beside his door.
Maybe he just needed time to cool off.
Maybe he’d come home soon.
Minutes passed.
Then an hour.
The hallway grew colder and quieter as the night deepened.
May you like
My phone screen dimmed as the battery dropped lower and lower.
But...
